today I inaugurate my new blog website!
# a fresh start
I have ported all of my existing blog posts from my GitHub pages blog.
with this revamp and fresh start, I want to try to implement a few changes with my blog posts; I want to:
- broaden my range of topics! (although expect me to post about field projections a lot in the beginning, more on that later)
- increase the frequency of my postings, which have been rather chaotic.
- create shorter posts that don’t do a deep dive, but just give a direction. this ought to also help with making more frequent posts!
# blog features
I have hand-crafted the style and structure of the website myself, using the awesome static site generator Zola. I have implemented several ideas to enhance my posts:
- each post has an abstract that’s shown in italics on the overview page.
- every headings has an anchor next to it, so you can link to a specific part of a post. the top-level heading has a link to the overview page.
- posts also have several pieces of metadata:
- a publish date (and an update date) that’s used to sort the posts on the overview page;
- an estimated reading time for a quick and skimming reader as well as a slow methodical reader; and
- a list of topics the post is about (this post doesn’t have any topics). each topic has its own overview page, for example the
#rusttopic.
- aside from footnotes, I have custom inline popup notes !
- you can hover over the highlighted text to open the popup, or
- if you have javascript enabled, you can click on a note to open it (and keep it open until you click elsewhere, or open another note ).
- the blog has both a light and a dark theme that adapts to your browser settings.
# topics
most of my old posts are about in-place initialization. my most recent post from the very end of last year, was about my rust project goal: field projections. I hope to publish many more posts about that topic, as we’re getting quite close to a complete design. I also have partial drafts of posts about different topics, but none of them are ready yet.
I wish you lots of fun reading my posts!
